Description		    Commentary to the Zohar by R. Elijah ben Solomon Zalman of Vilna (1720-97) is a dominant figure in Jewish intellectual thought, his importance and prestige undiminished, as great today, if not greater, than in his own time. The Vilna Gaon’s extraordinary intelligence, expressed by his expertise in Torah at the age of three, outdistancing his tutors while a young child, his incredible proficiency over the entire expanse of the written and Oral Torah by nine, by which time he was already studying Kabbalah, accompanied by complete piety, are attested to by numerous reputable sources. More than seventy works, encompassing Bible, halakhah, Talmud, Kabbalah, and general sciences are attributed to him.

ווינער מוסיף: ונלוה בסופו: דף האחרון נדפס שנית עם תיקונים על פי גוף כ"י הגר"א (קהלת משה, עמ' 145, מס' 1156). דף עג-עח,א: "מהדורא תניינא מביאור הרע"מ". "אמר המ"ל ... הגיעני ... מעה"ק ירושלים ... העתקת ביאור הגר"א ז"ל על הרע"מ שהתנדבו יורשי ... מוהר"מ [מנחם] מענדל [משקלוב] תלמידו ז"ל לבהמ"ד מנחם ציון ... ראיתי בה ... מהדו"ב (מהדורא בתרא) על מאמרי' הראשונים מהרע"מ אשר נשמטו מכל העתקות שלפנינו ולא ידעתי אם הם כולם מרבינו הגר"א ז"ל. כי באיזו מקומות נראה מתוך הלשון שהוא מתלמידו, ד"ל". דף פג-פד,א: "אמר המ"ל, ראיתי להשלים פה ליקוטיו ז"ל על פ"ב [פרק ב] דחגיגה השייכים לביאורו על היכלות [נדפס בקעניגסבערג תרי"ז, בשם היכלות הזוהר], יען לא עלו בידי לקובעם שם בדפוס בסוף הספר". חיבור זה נכלל אחר כך בתוך: ספר יהל אור, ווילנא תרמ"ב.
