Letter authorizing R. Israel Tani to solicit and collect funds on behalf of the Tiberian Jewish community which is suffering from starvation due to destruction of crops by locust.
The document bears the stamp of R. Hayyim Samuel ha-Kohen, and the signatures in ink: of R. Raphael Abraham Khalfon (d. 1886) of Teuton, settled in Tiberius in 1860, became rabbi of Haifa in 1883, served till his passing; R. Simeon b. Abraham Abadi (b. 1826) of Aleppo, came to Tiberius in 1846, erudite scholar and author of several published works; R. Jacob b. Issachar Abulafia of Constantinople, settled in Tiberius in his advanced years, his signature appear on documents from 1874-1891 - this document places him in Tiberius 14 years earlier, translated Menorat Hamaor to Ladino (Constantinople 1893); R. Joseph David b. Issachar Abulafia (d. 1898) of Sofia, rabbi of Damascus in 1857, and Chief Rabbi of Tiberius 1883-1898; R. Isaac Basmonti(?); R. Abraham or Elijah ha-Kohen Dwick. |
