Detailed
Description
Frist edition of this version of Hesronot ha-Shas designed to supplement the Benveniste Talmud, which attempted to restore expurgated material from the Talmud. This is the purpose stated on the title page, which describes Kebuzot ha-Hashmotot as all the entries lacking form the Babylonian Talmud, Rashi, Tosafot, Rosh, Alfasi, and the commentary of the Rambam on Mishnayot, printed by Benveniste in Amsterdam in 1644. Also included are the omissions in the Maharsha’s Hiddushei Halakhot and Hiddushei Aggadah from the time they were first printed in Amsterdam until the present. The title page is not dated nor is the place of printing given. The Bet Eked lists two editions of Kebuzot ha-Hashmotot, both printed in Koenigsburg, the first not dated but given as [1858], the second dated as 1860. There is an approbation from R. Jacob Zevi ben Gameliel Mecklenborg and the text, which is organized by tractate, and within each entry provides the information detailed on the title page.

The Talmud was burned in 1553-54 and, when it was permitted to print the Talmud it was only in an expurgated form. The first open attempt to restore material was in the Benvensite Talmud, which was printed in the more tolerant city of Amsterdam. The Benveniste Talmud has been praised for restoring expurgated material. Indeed, when the Frankfort on Oder Talmud (1697-99) was printed that Talmud’s deficiencies were corrected by works based on the Benveniste Talmud. Nevertheless, there were omissions that remained uncorrected – some to this day – and Kebuzot ha-Hashmotot was an attempt to address the need for a corrective work. Reference Description
