A Halakhic debate between R. Abraham Isaac HaKohen Kook and the Beit Din Zedek from the Ashkenzic Hasidim community in Jerusalem regarding the kashruth for Passover of sesame seed oil prepared from dry sesame seeds. R. Kook, as rabbi of Yaffo, gave a hekhsher (kosher certification) for Passover use of sesame seed oil. Some of Jerusalem's rabbis objected. His reply was that sesame seed is not on the list of prohibited item for Passover use. Even it it had been on the list, the oil, extracted from dry seed, would be permitted as yotz'ei kitnios (derivitive). Additionally,the issur (prohibition) kitnios is to treat them as if they are one of the five grains that leavend products can be made of. Raw dry wheat or barley seeds are not chametz, only if wet do they become chametz and prohibited on Passover. Similarly one can open a pea pod and eat dry peas. When wet they become "k'ilu" kitnios. The issur of kitnios cannot be greater than the issur of real chametz.
The Badatz basically admitted to Rav Kook that he was correct halachically but allowing Sesame oil on Pesach would be an opening for Reform Jews. |
