Description		    Profusely illustrated work on difficult tractates in the Talmud by R. Jacob ben Samuel Bunim Koppelman. The title page informs that it includes all the halakhot on abstruse subjects in the Babylonian Talmud. It is based on the commentaries of Rashi, Tosafot, Rambam, and other geonim. It is so arranged that the reader can with ease find what he is looking for. It was brought to press by R. Zevi Hirsch ben Gershon and is dated with the verse, “You will show truth to Jacob, and loving mercy to Abraham” (Micah 7:20). Omek Halakhah has approbations from R. Zevi Hirsch ben Jacob Ashkenazi and R. Solomon ben Jacob Ayalon, followed by the apologia of R. Zevi Hirsch ben Gershon. There is an introduction R. Isaac ben Aaron. The text, iin a single column in rabbinic type, is primarily concerned with tractates in Seder Zera’im and Seder Mo’ed but also addresses other Talmudic tractates. The numerous illustrations, on almost every page, are diagrams clarifying complex issues in the subject tractates. R. Koppelman draws on mathematics, botany, engineering, and geography in his explanations.

R. Jacob ben Samuel Bunim Koppelman (1555–1594) was born in Brisk, Poland. He was a Talmudic scholar, the student of R. Mordecai ben Abraham Jaffe (Levush, c. 1535-1612) and also studied astronomy and mathematics. R. Koppelman afterwards went to Frankfort on the Main to establish a yeshivah but was forced to leave that city in 1583 on account of the plague. He was associated with the press in Freiburg where he was the translator of Mishlei Shu’anlim (1583) and the Targum to the five Megillot (c. 1585). He was also the author of Ohel Ya’akov (Freiburg, 1584).
