Description		    First publication of these responsa from the geonim, from an old manuscript arranged by Rabbenu Joseph Tov Elam. R. Solomon Judah Leib Kohen Rappaport, Rosh bet din Prague, wrote a detailed introduction to the volume, providing backround on and biographies of the geonim. Teshuvot Geonim Kadmonim was prepared for press by David Cassel and financed by R. Aryeh Leib ben Dov Be’er Zarinzansky. There are approbations from R. Jacob Joseph ben Mordecai Ettinger, R. Elkhanan ben Zunvel Rosenstein, R. Jehiel Michael Zaks, and R. Aaron Fold. The text, in a single column in square letters, is comprised of 152 responsa. The volume concludes with a listing of the responsa, notes related to responsum 19, a German forward and a German title page. The importance of these responsa to understanding a formative and not well known period following the redaction of the Talmud can not be overstated.

The geonim were recognized by the Jews as the highest authority of instruction from the end of the sixth century or somewhat later to the middle of the 11th. In the 10th and 11th centuries the title of gaon was also used by the heads of academies in Erez Israel. In the 12th and 13th centuries - after the geonic period in the exact sense of the term - the title gaon was also used by the heads of academies in Baghdad, Damascus, and Egypt. Apparently, the term gaon was shortened from rosh yeshivat ge'on Ya'akov (cf. "the pride of Jacob," Ps. 47:4). Other explanations of the origin of the term offered by modern scholars are not acceptable.
