Detailed
Description
R. Mordecai b. Joseph Bengio (1825-1917), was elected chief rabbi of Tangier at the age of 28 in 1855, succeeding his grandfather, R. Moshe, who died of the plague. In the election for chief rabbi, he won over R. Reuben M. Bengio, R. Moshe Marrache and R. Moshe Pimienta. His election was confirmed by Caid ben-Abbas. R. Bengio was an erudite scholar and considered a great rabbinic authority. At the end of the nineteenth century he founded the Ez Haim synagogue. He worked hard to reform the Junta and bring a measure of democracy to the community on non-religious issues. R. Mordecai also supported the opening of the schools. R. Bengio served as chief rabbi until his death in 1917, for over 62 years.
