Description

Three issues of single issue satirical political journals. Had Gadya, a Pesah issue, has a cartoon on the cover of a Pole stabbing a Jewish worker under the heading Shihita is permissible in Poland. The verso and within the journal are advertisements reflecting contemporary life in Mandate Palestine, for hotels, dentifrice, Carmel wine, razor blades a cruise line, and an orthopedist. The contents are both prose and verse, political commentary, reflecting the worsening Jewish situation and including a section entitled shiduhim and shadhunim with the subheading a chapter of Jewish folklore, among its entries is between a conversation between a father and shadhun. Father – I wonder about you. The boy that you sent is blind (lit. eye is open ref. Numbers 24:3, 15). Shad. What of it. The Ba’al ha-Me’or was also blind. Father – Not only that but hi is very poor. Shad. That is a negative, The Ibn Ezra was impoverished. Fathger – The boy is a complete ignoramus. Shad. So, Rothschild is a great Torah scholar?

Ha-Oketz has thorns about its title and a picture of tombstones with the heading there is complete quiet in the land. It is similar in composition, but has two full pages of crtoons in addition to other cartoons accompanying the text. Halulyon is a Purim issue. At the time these journals were priced at 30 mil.
