Detailed
Description
Historical account of Jewish immigration to the United States, with notes and appendices by Max J. Kohler. Charles Patrick Daly was born on October 31, 1816 in New York City. His parents had emigrated to the United States from Ireland. Lacking a proper education, he worked as a clerk, cabin boy on a ship, and as a carpenter's apprentice. By some means, he took up the study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1839. In 1844 he became judge of the common pleas court in New York City, and went on to become Chief Judge, a position he held until 1885. Daly, among his other activities, served as president of the American Geographical Society.
