Detailed
Description
Prayers foir fast days according to the rite of the Sephardim, arranged by R. Samuel Rodriguez Mendes. The title page, with an attractive border, states that it is according to the custom of the Sephardim as printed by the editor, R. Mendes with the zemirot of Isael in Amsterdam. It is now being brought to press with “the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power” (Genesis 49:3) by his relative Jacob de Sola Mendes. It has been carefully edited by Elishev Nathaniel Zarfati, Sephardi Tahor and Isaac de Elijah ha-Kohen Belinfante. It is dated with the verse “all you the seed of Jacob, glorify him” (Psalms 22:24). The volume begins with words from several individuals and concluding with a kinnah. There is an approbation from R. Solomon Shalem and then the text. Seder Ta’aniyot is set in a single column in vocalized Hebrew. The text opens with Shaharit for a ta;anit, preceding into the prayers for Tisha b’Av, Zom Gedaliah, Minhah on a Ta’anit, Asarah b’Tevet, etc. The haftorah for Tisha b’Av includes translation into Spanish in Latin letters. R. Samuel Rodrigues Mendes, together with R. Samuel da Silva Mendes, were authors or editors of editions of the Sephardic ritual on which the modern editions of R. David Levi, R. Meldola de Sola, R. Leeser, and R. Gaster based their work.

The Mendes family is one of the oldest Sephardic families. It continued in Spain and in Spanish possessions long after 1492, the year of the general expulsion. Many members of the family and its connections undoubtedly succeeded that year in joining the Jews of Aquitaine. Others drifted to Holland, Italy, Turkey, etc. The Holland branch, to which R. Samuel Rodriguez Mendes belonged, produced some notable writers, such as David, son of Atalyah Franco Mendes (author of "Gemul 'Atalyah," "Hanukkat ha-Bayit," "Peri 'Ez Hayyim," "Teshu'ot Yisrael").
