Detailed
Description
Discourses on various subjects by R. Nissim Hayyim Moses ben Abraham Modai. The title page describes the discourses as “‘sought out (deroshim) all by all who love the’ (Psalms 111:2). ‘Then I said, behold, I come’ (Psalms 40:8) ‘Moses inquired’ (Leviticus 10:16) ‘in the congregation of the holy ones’” (Psalms 89:6). He brings aggadah that draw the heart, with faith in the sages. There is an introduction from R. Modai, in which each of its seven paragraphs begins and ends with hayyim. R. Modai praises the wife of Joseph Rozanes, who, on her death bed, with vowed money to print a book. On the verso of the introduction is an omission from folio 199 with an attractive tail-piece. The discourses follow, in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. The volume concludes with an alphabetic index. Within the text the homilies are arranged by subject matter and there are numerous discourses for each subject. Topics include sefer Torah, halbisha, Shabbat zecor, sefer Torah, marriage, and eulogies.
