Description

This is the second, enlarged and improved edition of this title on Palestine by Karl von Raumer (1783-1865). He was a German geologist, geographer and pedagogue, and is the author of numerous books including: Education of girls (Hartford, 1861), Geognostische Versuch (Berlin, 1815), German universities: contributions to the history and improvement of the German universities (New York, 1959), and many others. He is credited with being the first geologist to help in the planning of a military operation. Raumer originally studied law, but switched to the study of mineralogy at the distinguished mining academy in Freiberg in Saxony in 1805. In 1813, his academic studies were interrupted by a period of military service, as Prussia launched a campaign to liberate itself from Napoleon's French rule. He used his knowledge of the Silesian mountains to obtain a post as a staff officer, but, contrary to some reports, he seems to have made no direct contribution to the Prussian victory at the Battle of the Katzbach on August 26, 1813.
