Detailed
Description
Derashot and hespedim by R. Eliezer Zusman ben Mordecai Ephraim Fischel Sofer (1828-1902). He was born and educated in Bratislava (Pressburg) in the Sofer tradition. The title page describes R. Sofer as having been av bet din in Halash, then filling the position previously held by his father-in-law in Pacs from 1886. This, the second edition, is published with new material not in the previous edition. The verso of the title page has the caution against assuming that references to earlier people applies to contemporary gentiles and a warning against hasugot gevul. There is an introduction from the author’s son, R. Joseph Leib Sofer, written with a broken heart (after the recent passing of his father). Next is the author’s zava’ah (testament) and then his introduction, a detailed listing of the discourses followed by a concise listing. Mile’ah Ketoret is comprised of thirty-one discourses covering such subjects as teshuva (2), Shabbaat Hazon, hespedim (2), Shabbat ha-Gadol, the four parashiot, kiddsuh ha-Hamah, another hesped, on the Messiah, Shabbat ha-Gadol, aharon shel Pesah, Keter Malkut, Rosh Ha-Shanah, Shiminei Azeret, Hanukkah, the night of Rosh Ha-Shanah (2), Kol Nidre and Shabbat Teshuvah, Mattan Torah, eulogy on R. Naphtali Sofer, on the subject of teshuvah, the first day of selihot, the night of Hoshanah Rabbah (2), Tashlich, the discourse delivered by the author z”l when he first came to Paks, hesped for r. Joel Ungar, and a hesped for R. Hayyim Sofer. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type.
