Detailed Description |
|
Primer to teach the Hebrew language issued by the Ecole Normale Israelite Orientale in Paris. The Alliance Israelite Universelle founded the Ecole Normale Israelite Orientale in Paris (1867) to train and supply the necessary directors and teachers for its schools and to give their teaching staff a certain homogeneity. Students were recruited from the AIU schools in the various countries and their study in Paris was subsidized. The AIU educational institutions stressed the French language and culture, but Hebrew, Bible, and other Jewish subjects were taught in them as well, the extent of the latter varying in different communities and sometimes depending on the personal opinions and sentiments of the local school directors. Other Jewish schools in the communities where the AIU operated were influenced by this educational enterprise. Old hadarim underwent considerable modernization. In recent times the Ecole Normale Israelite Orientale has ceased to be exclusively a professional school, and admits students who do not necessarily intend to become teachers. Secondary schools have been opened in Nice and in Pavilions-sous-Bois near Paris.
