Detailed
Description
Comprehensive, scholarly, and lenghty commentary to Pirke Avot by an unnamed Lithuanian scholar. The work freely quotes many Lithuanian rabbis and works. This commentary was never printed and remains unknown to the Avot literature. The work contains an introduction (pp. 1-22) followed by the commentary. Chapter one fills pp. 23-38, chapter two pp. 38-54, chapter three 54-75, chapter four 75-84, chapter five pp. 84-94, and the final chapter pp. 94-112. A two line colophon declares the date of completion to be 18 Iyar, [5]629, the thirty third day of the Omer.

Avot became a text for recital in the synagogue, it has been reproduced and reprinted more often than any other talmudic work. It is included in editions of the traditional prayer book. Since it furnishes teachings of what the Jewish sages considered fundamental aspects of life, and because these teachings were expressed in polished epigrams, Avot has been the best known talmudic treatise among non-Jews. It has been translated into Latin, English, French, German, Italian - probably into every language the prayer book has been translated into.
