Detailed
Description
Bi-lingual Hebrew - Yiddish work on Hilkhot Shabbat by R. Jacob ben Abraham Weil. The title page states that he picked, explained, and transcribed from the Shulhan Arukh and the leading ahronim, among them Olat Shabbat, Turei Even, Magen Avraham, Eliah Rabbah, and Tosfot Shabbat. It informs that the author, Jacob is called Yakob Weil, and is the son of the righteous R. Abraham who was av bet din in Mohrain and afterwards was appointed to the same position in Sulzborg and Oberland. At the bottom of the title page is the verse, “and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the L-rd honorable; and shall honor it, not doing your own ways, nor pursuing your own business, nor speaking of vain matters . . . and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father” (Isaiah 58:13-14) from which Torat Shabbat is dated.

On the verso of the title page is a prohibition with the Herem of Joshua ben Nun against reprinting the book, even with additions, for a period of ten years. Next is R. Weil’s introduction in Hebrew, followed by the forward in Yiddish. R. Weil explains that while he brings both the Shulhan Arukh and Rema in their own language he ahas added the dinim of later sages. Where those authorities are not in agreement he clarifies the issue according to his humble judgement. The text follows the order of the Shulhan Arukh, from רמב to שמג. Torat Shabbat is set in a single column, comprised of the text Shulhan Arukh in square letters (both the mahaber and Rema), below in rabbinic letters is R. Weil’s detailed commentary, and on the facing page the both in Yiddish set in Vaybertaytsh. The volume concludes with verse, Shir le-Shabbat and a table of contents.
