Detailed
Description
Only edition of these discourses on the Torah, Megillot, and Haggadah by R. Naphtali Herz ben Shimon Ginzburg. R. Ginzburg belonged to the renowned Gunzburg-Ulma family The title page has an arched frame and the famed Benveniste pressmark, although the book is a Hamburg imprint by Thomas Rose. The title is from, “And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favor (Naftali seva razon), and full with the blessing of the Lord; possess you the west and the south” (Deuteronomy 33:23) The title page describes the contents of the book, comparing it to the work of the luhot, honoring both G-d and man. There are approbations from R. Saul of Cracow, R. Saul ben Naphtali Herz Ginzburg, R. Mordecai Sussking ben Mises Rottenburg, R. Hillel, R. Solomon of Zolkiew, R. David Oppenheim, R. Naphtali ha-Kohen, R. Menahem ben Benjamin Katz, R. Joseph ben Yudel, and R. Judah Leib. There is an introduction from R. Ginsburg and an apologia from the editor, also the author. The text is in two columns in rabbinic letters.

An interesting feature of Naftali Seva Razon is that the title page does not give the place of printing and Yaari mistakenly describes it as an Amsterdam imprint in his Hebrew Printers’ Marks. The confusion may be attributed to the statement on the title page that the work “is printed with AMSTERDAM letters,” juxtaposing large and small fonts so that only Amsterdam is prominent. The place of publication is not noted, although the printer’s name, Thomas Ruhyn (Rose), is given. The catalogues of the major collections and of Hebraica listings attribute this work to Hamburg, and the style of the architectural frame with lion and castle insignia is that of Thomas Rose. Rose was not the only printer to emphasize Amsterdam letters, which were highly regarded at the time.
