Detailed Description |
|
A collection of 23 sermons and synagogue lectures for festivals by Bez. R. Lazar Schlessinger of Bretten. The sermons are all in German, with a very occasional word or phrase in Hebrew. A Jewish community existed in Bretten from the time of the Middle Ages until 1938. Jews are first mentioned in 1264. Jews were persecuted during the times of the plague and in 1349 the Jewish community was destroyed. Jews returned to Bretten between 1380-1391. The modern community traces back to the period following the Thirty Years' War. In 1827 Bretten became the seat of a Bezirksrabbinates (a district rabbinate). The highest number of Jewish residents was reached in 1895 with 265 Jewish residents.
