Description |

First edition of this educational and ethical text for Jewish children by R. Isaac Elijah Menahem Ascoli. It is intended to instruct Jewish youth in wisdom and understanding and the fear of the Lord, to teach them proper conduct for contemporary times and in the time of the Temple in a pure and clear language. The title page is dated with the verse, “The least one shall become a thousand, and a smallest one a strong nation” (Isaiah 60:22). It is followed by a dedication to Samuel Aviezer Sar Shalom Biankini and Solomon Minrabi, students of the author. There is an introduction from R. Ascoli and then the text, set in a single column in rabbinic letters and comprised of fourteen chapters. The text is accompanied by footnotes and names are transliterated into Italian in Latin letters. Part of the text describes the Temple grounds and services. It is reported that the text is accompanied by a depiction of the outer altar but there is no indication that this copy ever had that illustration. At the end of the volume is the introduction (approbation) of the rabbis of Livorno. |
