Description
Yellow pages and daily calendar for the city of Tel Aviv for the year 1934. The book provides a fascinating insight to the commercial aspects of Jewish life in pre-state Israel at that time. The front orange end papers have advertisements for Ashrei Bank and a dentist, then a table of contents of the volume. There is a brief introduction, a page on the population growth of Tel Aviv concluding with a contrast to other cities in Erez Israel, a page of photographs of the founders of Tel Aviv, a calendar highlighting events in Erez Israel, including Torah readings, and then the advertisements. The first is for Mordecai Goldman’s cigar store, with a picture of a small hatted man behind a large cigar. Next are advertisemts for Hamumche truck and bus body builders with two photographs, one of the interior the other of the exterior of a bus. There are listings of phone numbers by enterprise, such as meat and fish, milk products, fruit, more advertisements, and an alphabetic listing of the residents of Tel Aviv. In addition to the listings and advertisements is a calendar with space by each date for the user to make entrees or notes.
