Detailed Description |
|
This pamphlet contains Libowitz’s polemical reviews of works by Ephraim Deinard. Libowitz (1862-1939) immigrated from Poland to America in 1881 and settled in Newark. Among his numerous works were some vitriolic polemics against various Jewish scholars, though he reserved special treatment for his arch-nemesis, Deinard. The feud between the two was so strong that Deinard in his bibliography of American Hebraica (Koheleth America) did not list even one of Libowitz’s many books. The one time that Deinard did refer to Libowitz in (#39), he did not even mention his name, but merely spoke of an unnamed critic as a “fool.” אפרים דיינארד וספריו באמעריקא contains an account of what may very well be the origin (at least in Libowitz’s mind) of their feud (p. 14n). An epigram on the title pages reads: “he who appeases the liar is worse than him.”
