Detailed
Description
An account of the tribulations of R. Jacob Dov Gross, the shohet and Bodek in Kabersorf, Austria. He relates that one of the communal heads that had lost all of his money decided to fire R. Gross in order to replace him with someone for less money. Gross suggests that this individual had misappropriated communal funds and hoped to replace them by saving on R. Gross’s salary. It was done in such a manner that another member of the community was trained to fulfill R. Gross’s duties with the intent that not only he but other shohtim would be expelled from the country. They revoked the shohtim’s long term permits, replacing them with short term permits that had to be renewed frequently. In this manner R. Gross was released, not renewing his permit when it came up after it had expired. The refusal to renew was accompanied by a glowing recommendation so that he would leave the country. R. Gross provides details of the event and related occrences, including the comeuppance of the communal head. The authors were R. Zevi Rosenburg, was R. Gross’s son-in-law and his son R. Nathan Feitel.
