Description		    The English Zionist Federation was founded in January 1899, with Sir Francis Abraham Montefiore, a grand-nephew of Sir Moses Montefiore, elected the first president of the Federation. Many leading figures of the established community, notably the first Lord Rothschild, Sir Samuel Montagu (Lord Swaythling), and Hermann Adler, the chief rabbi, opposed it.
