Introductory Italian text for teaching Hebrew and a preparatory work designed for the study of Hebrew literature by R. Eleazar (Lazzaro) Ottolenghi. The full title is Ossia Esercizzi Graduati per apprendere con Metodo nuovo, Facile e breve la Lettura Ebraica (graduated exercises in order to teach, with a new, easy and brief method, the Hebrew alphabet). There is an introduction in Italian, an Avvertenze ai signori istruttori (word to the instructors), and the text. At the head of the first text page is an illustration of a horned Moses. Ossia Esercizzi Graduati begins with the vowel points, and advances to consonants with multiple pronunciation exercises, reading exercises with syllables with interlinear Italian and concludes with Hebrew reading exercises.
R. Eleazar (Lazzaro) Ottolenghi (1820–1890) was a scion of the renowned Ottolenghi family of Piedmont, apparently originating in Germany, the name being an Italian form of Ettlingen. Among its prominent members is R. Joseph b. Nathan Ottolenghi (d. 1570), rabbi of Cremona rabbi. R. Eleazar (Lazzaro) Ottolenghi was born in Acqui. He held rabbinical office in Turin, Moncalvo, and Acqui, settling in Rome a year before his death. Author of a number of piyyutim, he also wrote a comedy, Matrimonio misto (1870), and Dialoghi religiosomorali (1873). In his youth, he also wrote several tragedies, one of which, Etelwige, was presented in Acqui in 1852.
