Detailed
Description
Only edition of this commentary on Pirkei Avot by R. Abraham ben Hanokh Henokh. The title page describes it as a branch of the tree of the fathers (Anaf Ez Avot), small in size, the leaf of the palm, that I received a blessing from the great Ashel “with beautiful branches” (Ezekiel 31:3) with several plays on the word ñðñåï. It continues that the subject is to explain the Mishnayot of Tractate Avot as he was taught from Heaven. Beginning on the verso of the title page is an apologia (1a-3a) from the author, in which he notes “one who wishes to be pious should fulfill the words of Avot” (cf. Bava Kamma 30a). He brings words of aggadah that draw the heart of man like water, “And by the stream, upon its bank, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for food and their fruit shall be for food, and their leaves for healing” (cf. Ezekiel 47:12). “I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of its boughs ñðñåï” (Song of Songs 7:9). In his hand was one bough ñðñåï from a branch of the tree of Avot (anaf ez Avot). R. Abraham writes that he took “of the first of all the fruit” (cf. Deuteronomy 26:2) but not all the first fruits as an offering to the L-rd, a poor persons offering. A poor person is only one lacking in knowledge. R. Abraham thought to present here what was written by the great eagle, the Rambam, what he wrote at the beginning of Sanhedrin that begins “All Israel has a portion in the World to come” and the thirteen ikkarim. The text of Anaf Ez Avot is in a single column in rabbinic type. This is the only published work by R. Abraham ben Hanokh Henokh.
