Description		    Only edition of these novellae on the Talmud and on the Shulhan Arukh Hoshen Mishpat by R. Nehemiah ben Abraham Segal called Feival Rushniz. R. Nehemiah was a communal leader in Prague, where he died 20 Tevet 408 (Wednesday, January 15, 1648). Navo, in both titles, refers to the author’s name, Nehemiah ben Abraham, נהמיה בן אברהם. R. Hayyim Joseph David Azulai (Hida, 1724–1806) writes in the Shem ha-Gedolim (daled 13) that he heard from R. Hayyim ibn Attar (Or ha-Hayyim) that in his time one sage learned from this work and spoke about it harshly. That night he (Divrei Navo) came to strangle that person until he wept and begged forgiveness, promising never to disparage any author. In an accompanying note (Menahem Zion) it is reported that after Nehemiah died a manuscript entitled Derash Navo on the Torah was found. Divrei Navo // Pi Navo is in two parts, each with its own but alike title page, which has an architectural frame. The text of Divrei Navo praises Nehemiah’s piety and learning and informs that for many years he was a leader and manhig in Prague, and that he was called Feivel Rushniz. He swam “‘in mighty waters” (Exodus 15:10), in the sea of the Talmud, in the powerful waters. ‘See, this new thing’ (cf. Ecclesiastes 1:10) in the gemara, dialectics and reasoning, on Rashi and Tosafot, his words ‘sweeter also than honey’” (cf. Psalms 19:11). It was brought to press by the brother-in-law of the author, R. Israel ben Hayyim of Bunzlau, to enlighten the eyes of Israel. It dates the completion of the work to, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron הכהנים בני אהרן (448 = 1688)” (Leviticus 21:1).

On the verso of the title page is Nehemiah’s introduction. He writes that this work should be a remembrance for him and those of his companions who listen to his voice. It concludes with several lines of verse, the first letters in each line forming an acrostic of his name. Next are approbation from the rabbinate in Prague signed by R. Benjamin Wolf ben Aaron Simeon Shapira, R. Samuel Helman ben Abraham, R. Shraga Phoebus ben Eliezer Halpin, and R. Solomon Zalman ben Moshel; approbations from the Sephardic and Ashkenazic rabbis in Amsterdam, R. Isaac Aboab, from R. Jacob Sasportas, R. Moses Judah ben Kalonymousha-Kohen, and from Worms, R. Aaron Teomim. The Text follows, in two columns in rabbinic. Divrei Navo concludes with a page of errata. There are several varied tail-pieces, set after the introduction and approbations. The title page of Pi Navo, is dated, “in the integrity בתום (448 = 1688) of my heart and innocency of my hands” (Genesis 20:5), is only slightly from the first part to reflect that its subject matter deals with Hoshen Mishpat.
