Description		    Heinrich Heine (originally Hayyim or Harry; 1797–1856), German poet and essayist. One of the greatest lyric poets in the German language and Germany's outstand ing Jewish writer, Heine has given rise to more controversy than almost any other author of world rank. His birthplace, Duesseldorf, was during his early, formative years part of the Napoleonic Empire, and the intoxicating, though shortlived, emancipation which the Jews then tasted later found expression in works idealizing Napoleon and the French. The enthusiasms and shattering disappointments that affected German liberalism and Rhenish Jewry before and after Napoleon's overthrow partly account for the many conflicts and paradoxes that mark Heine's career. He extolled the virtues of ordinary Germans, but savagely attacked the crimes of their rulers; one of his most famous poems, "Die Wallfahrt nach Kevlaar" (c. 1823; in:... Buch der Lieder), showed a deep empathy for Catholicism, yet he produced some of the greatest Jewish verse outside Hebrew or Yiddish; and he formally abandoned Judaism, yet mocked his fellow converts and in the end favorably reassessed his old faith. Moreover, though scorned by his homeland, he gained fame and recognition abroad.
