Lewinson published this work to demonstrate that statements by various individuals found in the Midrash and Talmud could be understood only within the context of what the individuals had said elsewhere (pp. 3-9). It also contains (pp. 10-5) annotations that Lewinson did not include in his חיי לבבות (Vienna: Bet Hamidrash, 1872), a critical study of R. Bahya ibn Paquda's Hovot ha-Levavot based on textual variants. Freimann, Mishkin (#1) and Rosenfeld (#1016) record this as the first work published in Chicago with Hebrew type.
