Only edition of this halakhic work on debtor and creditor laws in Jewish law by R. Jacob ben Jekuthiel Berdugo. The title page, with verses appropriate to the subject matter on all four sides about the text, states that it is a pesak din (halakhic decision) on one of the halakhot of a tanna of the Tosefta by the author of Kol Ya’akov, transcribed by the brothers Moses and his brother and son-in-law Hayyim. It was brought to press by R. Abraham ben Joseph Halvah. The title page is dated with the verse “and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s house” (Isaiah 22:23). Hilkhata li-Meshiha is a detailed work on a complex subject. There are a large number of approbations at the end of the book.
R. Jacob ben Jekuthiel Berdugo belonged to the distinguished family of that name in Morocco. Residing chiefly in Meknis, the family, according to tradition, was of Davidic descent through the exilarch Bustanai. R. Jacob ben Jekuthiel Berdugo (1783–1843), was a dayyan and poet, known for his stand against the rabbis of Tiberias in favor of the Jerusalem rabbis in the controversy of 1836 over participation in the halukkah. His other works include Shufrei de-Ya'akov, responsa (1910); Gallei Amikta, a commentary on Mayim Amukkim of Judah Berdugo (1911); Kol Ya'akov, liturgical poems (1844). To'afot Re'em or Karnei Re'em, on Rashi and Elijah Mizrahi, is still in manuscript (Ms. Jerusalem National Library, Ms. Heb. 8°3839, and 1448). |
