Limited edition of the blessings said at the huppa during the wedding ceremony in Hebrew and Dutch with accompanying commentary in Dutch. The front cover has the date 19 Elul 5699 (3 September 1939). The first page has a Magen David at the top followed by the statement of betrothal made by the groom when he gives the bride the ring. This statement, in Hebrew, is preceded by Dutch instructions and followed by commentary in that language. The verso and following pages have each of the seven blessings said under the bridal canopy (hpupa) with facing Dutch translation and below explanatory remarks. This Birkhot Nissu’in was printed in a limited edition of 200 copies, of which this is number 111.
The seven benedictions, commonly known as the Sheva Berakhot, recited with the benediction over wine (number 1) are recorded in the Talmud (Ket. 7b–8a) where they are called Birkat Hatanim ("the bridegroom's benediction"). When recited under the huppah the benediction for wine precedes the other six which are:
1) "Blessed art Thou... who hast created all things to Thy glory.
2)... Creator of man.
3)... who hast made man in Thine image, after Thy likeness, and hast prepared unto him, out of his very self, a perpetual fabric. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, Creator of man.
4) May she who was barren (Zion) be exceedingly glad and exult, when her children are gathered within her in joy. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, who makest Zion joyful through her children.
5) O make these loved companions greatly to rejoice, even as of old Thou didst gladden Thy creature in the garden of Eden. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, who makest bridegroom and bride to rejoice. 6) Blessed art Thou... who hast created joy and gladness, bridegroom and bride, mirth and exultation, pleasure and delight, love, brotherhood, peace, and fellowship. Soon O Lord, our God, may there be heard in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of joy and gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the jubilant voice of bridegrooms from their canopies, and of youths from their feasts of song. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, who makest the bridegroom to rejoice with the bride." |
