Detailed
Description
Homiletics by R. Baruch b. Meir Shalom Cohen (1861-1931). He was born in Raseiniai, Lithuania and educated by his father and a local rabbi. In 5627 [1867] he moved with his family to Branks, where his father was appointed the rabbi a few years later. He entered the yeshivah in Volozhin in 5643 [1883], but his studies were interrupted by his marriage. He moved to Daugavpils in 5648 [1888] and was ordained by his uncle, R. Moses Joel haKohen Gurion. After an unsuccessful foray into commerce, he continued his studies was ordained by R. Elijah Feinstein. R. Cohen immigrated to America in 1900. At first an assistant to R. Jacob Joseph, he became disgusted with the rabbinate in America and in 1902 he became the kashruth supervisor for the Zion Wurst factory. This profession was not endearing to him either, especially after a protracted dispute with the owners. He later served as the rabbi of Anshei Kalvarier (Sons of Israel/B'nai Israel) in Harlem. R. Cohen was a member of the Board of Orthodox Rabbis.
