Detailed
Description
First edition of this discourse on aggadah and Shabbat ha-Gadol delivered by R. Jacob Simhah ben Moses Rehfisch (Ravid of Kempna) on Sunday, Shemot of 1839. R. Rehfisch served as rabbi in Kempna (Kempen), the same community as that of R. Meïr Leib Malbim. On the verso of the title page is a note of appreciation from R. Ezekiel Eliezer Landsberg to his brother-in-law for transcribing the words of the gaon. The text begins with the Talmud (Berakhot 18a) “Rahavah said anyone who sees a dead body and does not accompany it transgresses the verse, ‘one who mocks a pauper blasphemes his Maker’ (Proverbs 17:5)’ but if he accompanies it what is his reward? Rav Assi says ‘The Lord lends to whomever is greacious to the poor’” (Proverbs 19:17). This is the only independent printing of Derush. It was, however, reprinted as part of R. Rehfisch’s Sha’arei Simhah (Warsaw, 1878).
