Attractive illustrated book of sculptured menorot by Moses Oved. Facing pages are comprised of a full page photograph a menorah and an accompnayijg Yiddish text. These menorot are not Hanukkah menorahs but rather candelabras, all designed for six candles in two sets of three in commeration of the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. While a few number might be considered conventional, the majority are unusual, most being built upon the faces or full forms of animals, such as the ram.
Moses Oved (Good, Edward;1885–1958) was a Yiddish writer, artist, sculptor, and gem expert. Oved left Poland in 1903, and settled in the East End of London, where he worked as a watchmaker. He began to trade in antique watches and cameo brooches and founded "Cameo Corner," a shop for antique jewelry. The royal family and members of fashionable society patronized his shop. His first book in Yiddish, Aroys fun Khaos (1917; Out of Chaos, 1918), was followed by Lebns Lider (1924). In Visions and Jewels (1925), a collection of 124 autobiographical stories and short tales, he wrote about Nahum Sokolow, Max Nordau, Sholem Asch, Jacob Epstein, and others. The Book of Affinity, 1933, was a deluxe production with original color lithographs by Jacob Epstein. At the age of 60 he began to produce sculpture, which reflected the classical philosophy he had expressed in his writing and poetry. Among his sculptural works are "Ram with Candelabra" and "Community of Israel," lamenting the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. |
