Detailed
Description
Rabbinic prohibition on participating in the elections held in Israel for the fifth Kenesset by rabbinic authorities. The letters issued against participation are arranged chronologically and almost all were issued prior to the establishment of the state of Israel. Nevertheless, the rabbis who wrote the letters are among the greatest rabbinic figures of the twentieth century. The title page is opposed to granting women the right to vote and participate in the elections, stating that is forbidden to join in the selection of members of the Kenesset who are heretics and atheists. The first letter, opposing the participation of women in the election is signed by R. Moses Nahum Wollenstein, R. Mordecai Leib Rubin, and R. Isaac Fraenkel (1920). The second letter, prohibiting every Jew, men and women, young and old, to vote is signed by R. Isaac Yeruchim diskin and R. Hayyim Sonnenfeld. There are two additional letters in which R. Sonnenfeld joins with other signatories forbidding voting. Next is a letter from R. Abrham Menahem ha-Levi Steinberg (1925). Additional letters include one from R. Joseph Yedidah ha-Levi , Sephardi Tahor, and the Hafez Hayyim, who writes that we should not chase after the hafshim (non-religious) and should not fear to be alone, for we will be victorious for do we not trust in the Lord? There is a pesak halakhah signed by R. Meir Simhah ha-Kohen (Or Same’ah) and others. The final letter is dated 1951.
