Detailed
Description
Sermons for Sabbath ad festivals in German with occasional Hebrew by Dr. Baruch Isaac ben Israel Lipschutz. The full title is Ein Erbauungsbuch für Israeliten an Sabbath, Festtagen und im besonderen feierlichen Momenten des Lebens (A devotional book for Israelites for Sabbath, holidays and the special ceremonious moment of the life). Below Dr. Lipschutz’s name the title page further informs that the contents were assembled, added to, annotated, and edited by S. Lipschütz. There is a Hebrew title page that notes that Torat Shemu’el is in two parts, the first, homilies for Shabbat and festivals, is entitled Birkat Yizhak,; the second, discourses for weddings, bar mizvot, eulogies, etc. is entitled Bet Shemu’el. The second part also includes numerous profound explanations on many verses in the Bible, sayings, aggada in the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds and midrashim. There is a forward in German followed by a Hebrew introduction, a tablel of contents, and then the text. Torat Shemu’el is in German set in Fraktur, with occasional Hebrew and accompanying footnotes.

Dr. Baruch Isaac Lipschütz, son of Lipschütz was born in Dessau; he died in Berlin Dec. 18, 1877. He was at first rabbi at Landsberg, and then district rabbi in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, but was obliged to resign both positions in consequence of disagreements with his congregations. Thereafter he lived in private at Hamburg.
