Description

Four important works printed and bound together all on talmudic methodology, each with their own title page. The first, on conduct of talmidim and introduction to learning is Hanhagat ve-Limud ha-Talmud & Darkhei Yesod ha-Limmud by R. David ben Raphael Meldola. There is an introduction from the printer, a Latin dedication, approbations, additional introductory matter, verse, introduction of the text, comprised of the principles in square letters and the commentary in rabbinic letters. R. David ben Raphael Meldola was born at Leghorn 1714 and reputedly died at the age of 104. He went with his father to Bayonne, left that city in 1735, and settled in Amsterdam, where he undertook the publication of his father's works, as well as some of his own writings. He was appointed hakham of several of the religious societies and philanthropic organizations. R. Meldola was the author of: "Mo'ed David" (Amsterdam, 1740), an astronomical and mathematical work, including a poem giving the rules of the calendar (first published in the ritual work "Tefillat Yesharim," ib. 1740); "Divrei David" (ib. 1753); Darke David (Amsterdam and Hamburg, 1793-95); and many others preserved in manuscript. The second work is Darkhei ha-Gemara by R. Isaac ben Jacob Campanton (1360-1463). R. Campanton, one of the leading Spanish sages in Castile prior to the exile, was known as the Gaon of Castile. He headed a Yeshiva in Zamora, counting among his students R. Isaac de Leon, Isaac Aboab II, Samuel Valensi, and Shem Tov ibn Shem Tov.Originally published as published as Darkhei ha-Talmud due to the prohibition on the use of the term Talmud, the title was subsequently printed as Darkhei ha-Gemara.

Halikhot Olam and Mevo ha-Talmud, two titles printed together, respectively by the talmudist R. Yeshu'ah ben Joseph ha-Levi (15th century) and R. Samuel ha-Nagid (993-1055), vizier of Granada, scholar, and poet. R. Yeshu=ah, a resident of Tlemcen, Algeria, relates that he was raised and lived among the sages of that city until 1467, when, due to the fierce persecution of the Jews, he was forced to flee to Castile, settling in Toledo, finding a gracious sponsor in Don Vidal ben Lavi. It was at Don Vidal's request that Yeshu'ah wrote Halikhot Olam. Yeshu'ah remarks on both the inadequacy of earlier works and his own lack of qualifications to write such a book. R. Samuel ha-Nagid, although from a prominent family and of Davidic descent, at one time operated a a spice shop in Malaga. He rose to become vizier in Granada, even commanding Muslim armies. He supported yeshivot, wrote poetry, and a digest of talmudic laws, Hilkheta Gavrata, influential in its time but since mostly lost, excepting fragments published in Jerusalem in 1962.

ר' דוד מילדולה חיבר ארבעה "קונטרסים" (חיבורים), ספרי הדרכה למתחילים בלימוד התלמוד: "הנהגת התלמידים" ו"לימוד התלמידים", "דרכי הלימוד" ו"יסוד הלימוד". שני הראשונים נספחו לספר "הליכות עולם" מאת ר' ישועה הלוי, אמשטרדם תקי"ד, ושני האחרונים נספחו לספר "דרכי הגמרא" מאת ר' יצחק קאנפנטון, שאף הוא נדפס באמשטרדם תקי"ד. הספר הנוכחי כולל את ארבעת ה"קונטרסים" הללו, והוא צירוף של דפי ה"קונטרסים" מתוך "הליכות עולם" ו"דרכי הגמרא". דף [3-2]: הקדשת ר' יעקב סרוק, בהולאנדית; דף [4]: הסכמות ר' יצחק חיים ן' דנא ור' אריה ליב; דף [6-5] הקדמות ושירים מר' יצחק בילינפאנטי. גם דפים אלו נלקחו משני הספרים הנזכרים. על ההוצאה הקודמת אומר ר' יעקב סרוק (מעבר לשער): "שכבר הדפסתי הד' קונטריסין האלו מחוברים עם ספר הליכות עולם [עמו נדפסו קונטריסים א-ב: הנהגות ולימוד התלמידים, והדפים 4-2], ודרכי הגמרא [עמו נדפסו קונטריסים ג-ד: דרכי ויסוד הלימוד, והדפים 6-5] שנדפסו על ידי [באותה שנה] ... וקלסוהו... על כן חילו פני להדפיסם שנית לבדם". דף ט,יא-יב, מט-נא: ספר "הנהגת התלמידים" וסביב לו "לימוד התלמידים". בראשם: "הקדמת הרב המחבר", האומר: "שרובם של דברים... באו בארוכה בחיבורי הגדול... מצודת דוד", שלא נדפס. סימון הדפים בהוצאה הראשונה: מו-נא. כאן מיספור הדפים שונה. דף [1], א-ז, ט-כ: "דרכי הלימוד" וסביב לו "יסוד הלימוד". בראשם: הקדמת הרב המחבר. מיספור הדפים כאן זהה למיספור שבהוצאה הראשונה (זו שעם "דרכי הגמרא"). ראינו טופס בו נוסף דף (בלתי-ממוספר) ובו הסכמה מאת ר' אליהו ב"ר רפאל שלמה סג"ל [די ויאלי], אליכסאנדריאה דילא פאלייא, יז לעומר תקי"ג (ההסכמה לחיבורו של ר' דוד מילדולה "דברי דוד"). כמו כן נוסף דף אחד בסוף הספר (גם הוא בלתי-ממוספר) ובו "ג כללים ... נוספים ... על אותם שחדשתי בד' קונטריסים" (העמוד השני של הדף חלק).
