Dutch work on Hebrew grammar by Rabbi J. D. Wijnkoop (Isaac Jospeh ben Zion Vainkohp, d. 1910). R. Wijnkoop served in Amsterdam as rabbi of the Nederl. Hoofdsynagogue and was the author of several books on Hebrew. The title page of Hebreeuwsche Taal (Hebrew lessons) has the heading Beknopt Leerboek (concise learning book). There is a forward from R. Wijnkoop and then the text, which is made up of forty-nine chaptes. The first eight chapters are on th eohysical components of the language, such as letters and vowels. The remainder of Hebreeuwsche Taal deals with conjugations of verbs and nouns and related parts of speech. At the end of the volume are errata and a table of contents.
R. Wijnkoop’s son was David Wijnkoop (1876–1941), a Dutch Communist. Although his father was a rabbi he became attracted to attracted to Marxism as a student. At first he joined the Labor Party (S.D.A.P.) and in 1905 became a member of its executive, but he later helped to establish a radical-Marxist newspaper and was expelled from the party. In 1909 Wijnkoop founded his own social democratic party, initially called the Social Democratic Party, which became the Communist Party of Holland in 1918. He was its chairman and sat in the Second Chamber of parliament from 1918 to 1940 as a Communist representative except for a short period in which he founded an independent Communist Party. Wijnkoop was also a member of the Amsterdam municipal council and the North Holland provincial council.
