Detailed
Description
Fifteen homilies on Bible and Midrash by R. Solomon Zevi b. Shemaye Marcus. R. Marcus's grandfather was a rabbi in Zamut, Kovno Province, and his father was the rabbi of Rozhanka, Vilna Province (Byelorussia). R. Marcus himself served as a rabbi in Rozhanka for 47 years. We find him in Bayonne, Cleveland, and in Brownsville (Brooklyn). Goren Shlomo was printed in Brownsville and it is clear from the approbations that Brownsville and New York rabbis knew him. R. Marcus lived a life of poverty in America.

In the first homily Marcus contrasts Jewish life in America and in Europe and laments the low level of observance in a free society as compared with the high level in Europe. The preface contains family information. R. Marcus hoped to publish additional volumes (p. [6]), but none are recorded.
