Detailed
Description
Homiletics by R. Jacob b. Judah Levinson (1875-1955). He was born in Krekenava, Lithuania and studied in the yeshivot of Telz, Kovno (Kollel Perushim), Siauliai and Eisiskes and was ordained by R. Samuel Moses Shapiro and R. Mordekhai Isaac Rabinowitz of Salantai. In 1905 he immigrated to Chicago and served as a rabbi. He moved to Brooklyn in 1918 to become the head of the newly-formed Mizrahi Teacher's Seminary (New York). R. Levinson also assumed the pulpit of Brownsville's Beth Midrash Hagadol. He resigned from the Seminary in 1925 to become the rabbi of Hovevei Torah of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, a position he retained for the rest of his life. R. Levinson was an early supporter of Mizrahi. He had formed a branch while living in Salant and his activities on behalf of Mizrahi consumed much of his time in America. He was also on the executive board of Agudath Harabbonim, was a member of the Joint Distribution Committee and was active in Ezrat Torah and the Va'ad Hatzalah. He was awarded a doctor of divinity degree by Yeshiva University in 1949.
