A poster calling for a world-wide public fast containing the reprint of a letter received by leading Rabbis (R. Yeruham Diskin and R. Yosef Hayyim Sonnenfeld) in Jerusalem from R. Yisrael Meir HaKohen (the Hofetz Hayim) and from R. Hayyim Ozer Grodzinsky. The letter from Vilna was dated the 8th of Tammuz 5682. It states that Jews in Russia and the Ukraine are suffering terribly, both physically from famine and from the sword, and spiritually from the closing of Talmud Torahs and from decrees against the practicing of religion.
The letter appeals to the leading Rabbis in Jerusalem to declare a worldwide public fast for the day preceding Rosh Hodesh Elul. The day should be dedicated to repentence and prayer and charity.
The poster contains both the reprint of the letter from Vilna and an announcement of a public fast, with a final prayer that such fasts would not be needed in the future... that the merciful one should have pity on His people and take them from distress to relief, from darkness to light, from subjugation to redemption...
