Detailed
Description
Petition seeking funds from Polish Jews in Vienna to build a large synagogue. The front page states that in the 70 years since the community was founded the rented synagogue has become far to small resulting in many negative incidents. The Jewish renaissance in Vienna began in 1848 when Jews were granted civil rights, partially due to their participation in the 1848 civil war and were allowed to form their own autonomous religious community. Full citizenship rights were given to the Jews of Vienna in 1867. As a result the Jewish population of Vienna increased dramatically by immigration of Jews from Hungary, Galicia, and Bukovina. There were 3,739 Jews living in Vienna in 1846, 9,731 in 1850, and about 15,000 in 1854.
