Description		    Discourses on the weekly Torah readings by R. Mordecai Hayyim. (Marcus Heimann) Seligsberg. Mekor Hayyim is part five, the final part, of Or Torah a large multi-part work printed from 1841 through 1859, the other parts primarily on ethics. R. Seligsberg was rabbi in Pelheim in Bavaria. There is a brief introduction from the author, who writes that he is now sixty years old, “‘I can no more go out and come in’ (Deuteronomy 31:2). I said, ‘when shall I provide for my own house also’” (Genesis 30:30)? He began to write this work on ethics and faith, to be learned weekly according to the sidrah. R. Seligsberg entitled the entire work Or Torah based on the verse “For the commandment is a lamp” (Proverbs 6:23), and R Simon said “it is written five times orah for the Hamishe Humsche Torah. (Midrash Rabbah Bershit 83). R. Seligsberg’s purpose has been to improve conduct and Middot. He thanks his sons, Isaac, Benjamin, and Solomon Seligsberg, who reside in America for their support in publishing his books. The text follows in a single column in square letters. At the end are concise likkutim (186-90) on various subjects and errata. The Bet Eked Sepharim lists this volume on the Torah as the first volume and reports later volumes on the megillot (1860) and haftarot (1863).
