Description
Map of Erez Israel by Michael Avi-Yonah (1904–1974), Israel archaeologist. Avi-Yonah was born in Lemberg (then Austria) and educated at the University of London. He went to Erez Israel in 1921 and was records officer of the Palestine Department of Antiquities from 1931 to 1948 and scientific secretary of the same department in the government of Israel from 1948 to 1953, when he became professor of classical archaeology and history of art at the Hebrew University. Avi-Yonah participated in excavations at Husifa, Beth-Shean, Nahariyyah, Bet Yerah, and Caesarea and was a member of the Masada Survey (1955). Among his works are: Bi-Ymei Roma u-Bizantiyyon ("In the Time of Rome and Byzantium" 1961); Madaba Mosaic Map (1954); Kadmoniyyot Arzenu ("Antiquities of Israel," 1955) with S. Yeivin; Oriental Art in Hellenistic and Roman Paelstine (1961); Ge'ografyah Historit shel Erez Yisrael le-min Shivat Ziyyon ve-ad Reshit ha-Kibbush ha-Aravi ("Historical Geography of Erez Israel from the Return to Zion until the Arab Conquest," 1962); Our Living Bible (1962; with E. Kraeling); Holy Land (1966); Atlas Cartale-Toledot Bayit Sheni ha-Mishnah ve-ha-Talmud (1966; "Carta Atlas of the Second Temple, Mishnaic and Talmudic Periods"); Toledot ha-Ommanut ha-Kelassit. Avi-Yonah served as editor of Sefer Yerushalayim ("Jerusalem Book") and of the archaeological and historical geography sections of the Encyclopaedia Judaica and the Atlas Israel. He edited A History of the Holy Land (1969).
