| It is interesting to note that at that time the Independence Day commemoration included a memorial service for those who fell in the War for Independence.[There was not yet a separate Yom HaZikaron] In addition, part of the ceremony was the beginning of the writing of a Sefer Torah , as a prayer of thanksgiving for the establishment of the State. This Sefer Torah would be considered as a Sefer Torah of the people and would be kept on Mount Zion, at a synagogue that is near the grave of King David. Everyone was encouraged to participate by choosing a letter of the Sefer Torah. And by writing the Sefer Torah fulfilling the Mitzvah of "And you should write for yourselves this song"... and that this Sefer Torah be "a song of thanks to G-d for the establishment of our state in our day."
