Bi-lingual German-Hebrew work on Karaite literature from the great collection in Petersburg. The larger German section has two facing title pages. The first states that it is Schriften herausgegeben Institut fur Förderung israelitschen Literatur (writings from the Institute for the Promotion of Israelite Literauture) under the direction of Dr. Ludwig Philippson in Bonn, Dr. A. M. Goldschmidt in Leipzig, and Dr. L. Herzfield in Braunschweig. These individuals were among the foremost scholars in Jewish studies. It also mention Dr. Adolph Neubauer (1831–1907), the scholar, author, librarian, and bibliographer. The second title page says Aus der Petersburger Bibliothek: Beitraege und Documente zur Geschichte des Karaeerthums und der karaeischen Literatur, von A. Neubauer (From the Petersburger library: Contributions and Documents for the history of the Karaites and Karaite literature of A. Neubauer). There is a dedicatory page to the der hochgeehrten (highly honored) Frau Horace Günzburg, born Anna Rosenberg in Petersburg.
Neubauer had studied in Prague with S. J. L. Rapaport and at the universities of Prague and Munich. In 1857 he went to Paris, where he pursued research at the BibliothIque Nationale, and in 1864 to Jerusalem as a member of the staff of the Austro-Hungarian consulate. There, too, he sought out rare Hebrew books and manuscripts, discovering in the Karaite synagogue a manuscript of extracts from the lexicon of R. David b. Abraham of Fez (15th century) which he published in the Journal Asiatique in 1861–62. Returning to Paris, he was befriended by the orientalists S. Munk, J. Derenbourg, and E. Renan. Invited to St. Petersburg in 1864 to examine the Firkovich collection of Karaite manuscripts, Neubauer wrote a report for the French Ministry of Education (Rapports... (1865) with S. Munk) and published this work, Aus der Petersburger Bibliothek.
The Hebrew section is comprised Sefer Apiryon asah lo from the Karaite Jedidah Solomon ha-Karai and Sefer Levush Malkhut.
