Zinberg describes this biography as, “Literally epoch-making, however, was his [Zunz] scholarly study of Rashi (“Saloman ben Isaac, genannt Rashi). With enormous scholarship Zunz managed to illuminate one of the obscurest but also most interesting moments in the cultural history of Franco-German Jewry. From scanty material scattered among hundreds of books, he erected a complete structure, provided a more or less substantial portrait of the great Parshandatha, or commentator, and his environment. He leads us into Rashi’s library and tells us the sources from which the great master drew the material required for his works which had such an enormous influence on the culture of the Jewish people.”
