Description

Novellae on tractates of the Babylonian Talmud, commentary on the weekly Torah readings, and a history of the author’s family by R. Joshua Cosman Wodianer. Nahalat Yehoshua is in two volumes, both with Latin and Hebrew title pages. The first part begins with a lengthy introduction in which R. Wodianer discusses his family history and writings. The novellae in this part are on tractates Shabbat, Eruvin, Pesahim, Bezah, Hagigah, Mo’ed Katan, Rosh Ha-Shanah, Yoma, Sukkah, Ta’anit, Megillah, and Yevamot. The second volume is on twenty-four additional tractates and includes the Torah discourses. Nahalat Yehoshua was brought to press by R. Wodianer’s son Aaron (Arnold) and edited by Prof. W. Bacher.

R. Joshua Cosman Wodianer (1788-1831) studied Talmudics under R. SamuelC. Brody and Lebusch Harif in Szegedin, under R. Moses Sofer in Mattersdorf, and under R. Moses Minz in Alt-Ofen. He settled after his marriage in Györ-Sziget he maintained a yeshibah of his own, which was usually frequented by forty to fifty pupils; and he enjoyed a high reputation as a Talmudist. R. Wodianer’s father, Philip Wodianer, was a noted communal worker and president of the Jewish community in Szegedin from 1793 to 1809, presenting that congregation with the site for its first synagogue, and with silver holy vessels for its Hebra Kaddisha
