Detailed
Description
Among the signatories is Simhah Mandelbaum, namesake of the "Mandelbaum Gate." Immediately after the cessation of hostilities in 1950 the only border-crossing point between Israel and Jordan was opened to the United Nations in Jerusalem off the historic road leading from Damascus Gate to Nabi Samwil (and the Coastal Plain). The one Arab Legion gain in the War of Independance was the capture of a building belonging to Mr. Mandelbaum. This became the celebrated Mandelbaum Gate (Mr. Mandelbaum's building was demolished), the crossing point between Jordan and Israel during the period from the armistice to the Six-Day War. In time the "Mandelbaum Gate" became the official crossing point for tourists, with passport-control and customs offices.
