640 x 500 mm., white satin mantle, embroidered in multiple colors, donor's name at bottom, no date.
Detailed
Description
The Torah mantle, protective and also beautiful, serves to focus attention on the holiest object in the synagogue. It developed in obedience to the talmudic admonition: "Have a beautiful scroll of the Law prepared, copied by an able scribe with fine ink and fine calamus; and wrapped in beautiful silk" (Shab. 133b). The mantle in Ashkenazi synagogues is a sheath, open at the bottom and closed at the top except for two circular openings through which the azei hayyim protrude. These mantles, of silk or velvet, are richly decorated with the columns of Jachim and Boaz, lions rampant, crowns, pomegranates, and the various implements of Temple service.
