Only edition of these halakhic novellae on all four parts of the Shulhan Arukh by R. Elijah ben Moses Israel. R. Israel is described as av bet din and rosh mesivta. There is an introduction from R. Israel’s son Israel, who brought the book to press, and then the text in two columns in rabbinic type. Friedberg mistakenly gives the place of printing as Livorno, although the title page clearly states Salonika.
R. Elijah ben Moses Israel (c. 1710-84) was born in Jerusalem, but from an early age was raised in Rhodes where his father served as rabbi. He studied under his father and perhaps R. Issac ha-Kohen (Batei Kehunah). R. Israel returned to Jerusalem after the death of his father in 1744, becoming, in 1763, as had been his father and uncle, an emissary for the Jewish community in Jerusalem to the Jewish communities in Western Europe. Elijah eventually returned to Rhodes and from there was appointed rabbi in Alexandria. He was not hesitant to rebuke his congregation when necessary, for in his Shenei Eliyahu (Livorno, 1806), homilies, a number of those admonitions are recorded. Another of his works is another commentary, Adderet Eliyahu (Livorno, 1828), a supercomentary on the Tosefot ha-Semag of R. Elijah Mizrahi, (c. 1450–1526). |
